BEHIND THE FRAME | Big in Japan

My latest project in Japan and the rise of documentary-style advertising

Hi Reader,

I hope you had a wonderful Easter holiday! During that time, I was in Japan shooting the new campaign for Fay Archive.

After my experiences in Alaska and Canada, I spent two weeks between Hokkaido and Tokyo to tell the stories of five extraordinary people.

Brands are increasingly harnessing the power of reality to connect with audiences, and documentary-style storytelling is redefining modern advertising. Those who dare to reveal their soul not only stand out but also build trust.

Using a documentary style in advertising has a significant impact, engaging much more when it offers an authentic glimpse into the world. This approach, showcasing the people and stories behind a brand, creates a genuine connection.

I believe that adding a personal and transparent touch is key to building lasting trust with your audience.

And there is plenty of room for creativity when blending real-life narratives with a dash of writing.

This authentic approach, characterized by prevalent natural light, unaltered sound in post-production, and characters in their natural context, is what we are adopting in the Fay Archive campaign, coming out next winter.

In the meantime, I'd like to share with you some of my travel snapshots, hoping they can convey a bit of the charm I found in Japan.

Photography has always been an important part of my life, and Tokyo has been an incredible source of inspiration.

Talk soon,

Marco

AIDA: let's talk about the future I spent a year alongside a group of young researchers from Politecnico di Milano who are developing and testing autonomous vehicles. From this experience, AIDA was born—a 55-minute documentary I wrote and directed, which I’ve just presented at the Royal Palace of Caserta. And I’m really happy to share the trailer with you, as a preview. When they asked me to tell their story, I was instantly intrigued. I thought: why aren’t these cars already driving through...

How to use AI without losing your soul As the world fills up with AI-generated everything, I’ve spent the winter on stage and with a pen in hand. Why? I use AI too. I’m using it right now to reflect and structure these ideas. But I use it as an accelerator, not as a creator. It’s time to stop feeling guilty about it and start thinking more critically about how we integrate AI into our creativity. What does it mean to find your own voice in an era where AI can write for you, generate images,...

When East Meets West Trieste, January. I’m sitting in a café just a few steps from the Hotel Savoia, where When East Meets West—one of the most important co-production forums in Europe—is taking place. Outside, the Bora wind blows, that icy gust sweeping down from the Balkans. In front of me, a capo in B (a macchiato served in a glass) and a producer. We’re talking about the short film I want to shoot with my daughter. I pitch it to him, and I see his eyes light up; I can feel that this film...
