Cinema Club x Perimetro: Carlo Sironi

Cinema Club is a ritual for those who want to share a film: we meet in the theater, watch movies, and explore common perspectives. A selection of the most interesting films showing in Milan theaters.

Now Cinema Club becomes a column in Perimetro, which tells the story of the world of cinema through a series of interviews with directors, screenwriters, actors, cinematographers, and producers (English version here).

Perimetro is an independent community magazine that narrates the present through photography and the culture of imagery: places, the underground scene, cultural frictions, vitality, and much more. Now, cinema is added to all of this.

Cinema Club gives a voice to auteur cinema and delves into themes and visions, as well as behind-the-scenes stories. An exchange of ideas and a discovery of cinema from a different perspective.

I had the pleasure of sharing a coffee with Carlo Sironi shortly after the Milan premiere of his latest film, My Summer with Irène.

His short films, including Sofia and Cargo, have been selected and awarded at various international festivals. His first feature film, Sole, debuted successfully in Venice and received awards at the David di Donatello and the European Film Awards. My Summer with Irène is his second film, presented at the Berlinale.

It was an informal chat to exchange ideas not only about his latest work but also to discuss his career and his approach to the world of cinema.

In recent years, we have seen a revival of theaters, with the success of small cinemas. This trend is joined by the success, at least in terms of positioning, of an auteur cinema platform like Mubi.

While Marvel and Pixar films are struggling, mid-range productions (not necessarily independent) have achieved surprising results in both cultural debate and audience numbers (to name a few from the current season: The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days).

TV series and streaming have become part of our habits but have not taken hold as initially imagined. There is a certain fatigue towards this form of entertainment, already defined as the “great unsubscribe”.

In short, cinema is returning to what it once was!

Hi, I’m a creator

I never wanted to be a director. Really. I was studying cinema at university, but it felt distant, unreachable. Then came music videos. And something clicked. Growing up, I fell in love with subcultures: photography, music, illustration, graphic design. Those images had incredible expressive power. A creative energy that captivated me. It was visceral, authentic. I started exploring all those visual languages until I found my own. Spoiler: it took a while. I like to let my imagination run...

AIDA: let's talk about the future I spent a year alongside a group of young researchers from Politecnico di Milano who are developing and testing autonomous vehicles. From this experience, AIDA was born—a 55-minute documentary I wrote and directed, which I’ve just presented at the Royal Palace of Caserta. And I’m really happy to share the trailer with you, as a preview. When they asked me to tell their story, I was instantly intrigued. I thought: why aren’t these cars already driving through...

How to use AI without losing your soul As the world fills up with AI-generated everything, I’ve spent the winter on stage and with a pen in hand. Why? I use AI too. I’m using it right now to reflect and structure these ideas. But I use it as an accelerator, not as a creator. It’s time to stop feeling guilty about it and start thinking more critically about how we integrate AI into our creativity. What does it mean to find your own voice in an era where AI can write for you, generate images,...
